Chris Spollen

Chris is currently a freelance illustrator, designer, and Professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City, where he teaches his students how to use the computer in their work - an area Chris has been concentrating his energies on over the past 10 years. Most recently he has been developing his mixed media fine art prints and is working on a series of metal and wood sculptures.
Both the images and subject matter in Professor Spollen’s work range from flying ships to vintage airplanes. He frequently gathers his materials from the beaches of Staten Island where he currently resides .
In addition, this self described tinker creates sculptures from recycled metal that he extracts from the common household pantry. These sculptures themselves are small works of art. Chris also creates digital images of his sculptures and with the aide of a computer, creates fantasy environments in which these images come to life.
Mr. Spollen’s work is reminiscent of a simpler time of tin toys, trains, planes, and automobiles that combine the unbridled bliss that is youth with a touch of naïveté.
Chris has won numerous awards and been represented in both museum shows and permanent collections. He has had his work exhibited nationally and has worked for a broad spectrum of national clients. In his spare time, Chris enjoys building human powered machines.
