Travel Expenses

“The structure of the Hartford program--using national-level working artists to provide the meat of the program--is perfect for the professional adult student. Working artist/instructors are able to more easily relate to working artist/students in a way that isn't usually possible in the purely academic realm, and the work that is produced by these artist/students clearly demonstrates the validity of the concept. ”

An Estimate of Contact Period Expenses for Students

This is a 60-credit MFA and for students starting in 2011 and graduating in 2013, the tuition and fees will be approximately $46,000 at current rates, plus the following estimated expenses.

It is impossible for us to accurately estimate the travel expenses for you. You live all around the country and your transportation costs and eating habits are all different. For your individual planning purposes there are 3 trips to Hartford CT (hotel room has a full kitchen), 1 trip to New York City NY, 1 trip to Dallas/Fort Worth TX (hotel room has a full kitchen), 1 trip to San Francisco CA and 1 trip to Los Angeles/Pasadena CA.

Some of the expenses incurred for our travel are: transportation to and from contact periods, car transportation during some of the contact periods, hotels, meals, and supplies.

We do get a complimentary full, hot breakfast at our hotel in July, which is the Marriott Residence Inn, Avon CT. Wherever possible, we use a hotel or motel with a complimentary breakfast when on contact trips and sometimes, when able, we provide a continental breakfast.

Your supply list will depend on how you create your assignments. Hartford faculty will contact you before your first class and give you your assignment so that you can bring supplies from home. There is a Michaels Arts & Crafts store, a Blicks art supply store and a Walmart near the hotel where you can pick up some last minute things. There is also a Jerry’s Artarama art supply store about 20 minutes from the school. Students bring whatever they can from home. Art supplies are not needed at the other contacts.

A Laptop is not required for the program, but you should bring one if your work depends on a computer. Our computer course is taught in an up-to-date computer lab with large format printers available at school to take care of prints and copies.

This is a collegial experience and you will make good friends in the program. In order to save money, 2 or 3 students usually room together during the contact periods, share rental cars and other general expenses. You will receive a complete list of incoming students, their websites, blogs, and their email address starting in March so you can contact everyone and get to know each other.
