Program Overview

“Personally, the MFA program has allowed me to step out of the solitude of the freelancer and into a community of artists and teachers who offer different viewpoints, techniques and methodologies. Personal connections made during the program; sharing ideas; being exposed to other markets; and being immersed in the creative energy of fellow artists has been invaluable.”

NOT AN ORDINARY MFA

IMAGINE being in a group of incredibly talented and motivated illustrators.
IMAGINE being surrounded by a group of practicing professionals from all over the country who have checked their egos at the door and have the courage to allow themselves to be exposed to life altering experience.
IMAGINE all the possibilities; our students do.

This prestigious program is the ONLY Low Residency MFA in the country that is dedicated exclusively to Illustration. It is designed for highly motivated professional illustrators looking for an environment where they can experience artistic stimulation and an infusion of new ideas, graphic designer/illustrators looking to enhance their illustration skills, and illustrators seeking to obtain an advanced degree for a career in education.

Our low residency format provides our students the opportunity of working closely with leading illustrators from all over the country while they continue with their careers, their teaching, and their professional and personal commitments. Students will benefit immeasurably by studying alongside other intensely motivated and highly talented artists who share their commitment to the field of illustration. We stress personal growth and help our students advance their distinct creative voice through challenging work, exposure to top professionals in the field of illustration, and exceptional student/faculty relationships.

Students are encouraged and assisted in refining and expanding their skills and techniques by utilizing all of their talents. They are also encouraged to nurture their creative intellect, and advance their business, promotion, and marketing skills to benefit their illustration careers. While doing this, students meet the requirements for a 60-credit MFA in Illustration - the standard for teaching at most colleges and universities – without disrupting their lives or careers.

The cornerstones of the program are the three intensive two-week summer residencies in consecutive Julys at the University of Hartford’s campus in Hartford, CT. Between these three two-week studio and lecture hall packed residencies, you will meet one week each November and one week each March in various cities across the United States with the leading illustrators and illustration entrepreneurs in that area. Graduation from the program is always held at the end of the third two-week summer residency at the University of Hartford.

The program was conceived and is directed by internationally renowned illustrator, educator and illustration historian, Murray Tinkelman. Murray has over 45 years of teaching experience including over 35 years experience in organizing and leading successful low residency graduate programs. Murray was awarded the prestigious Distinguished Educator in the Arts award in 1999 by the Society of Illustrators.

According to Murray Tinkelman, “Mid-career education is becoming increasingly important. It is inspiring to see successful, established illustrators and designers who are willing to be critiqued, share knowledge, and welcome support from fellow artists.”
